Sitter Terms
Last updated June 2026 · Applies if you list yourself as a sitter on petolina.com
1. Independent contractor
Sitters on Petolina are independent contractors, not employees of Petolina. You set your own services, prices, availability, and policies. You are responsible for your own taxes (CRA), GST/HST registration if applicable, and any business permits required by your municipality.
2. Eligibility and attestations
To list yourself as a sitter you must:
- Be at least 18 years old and a resident of Canada.
- Attest, at signup, that you do not have a criminal conviction relating to violence, animal cruelty, theft, or fraud within the last 7 years.
- Acknowledge that you are solely responsible for liability arising from your services (see section 6).
- Hold a valid Canadian bank account for Stripe payouts.
Petolina may at any time require additional verification, including a professional background check at our cost, and may suspend or remove sitters who fail to provide reasonable documentation.
3. Bookings and payment
All pet sitting transactions on Petolina must go through Petolina's booking system. You may not solicit pet owners discovered on Petolina to pay you off-platform for services that originated here. Doing so is grounds for suspension.
Petolina charges a platform fee of 20% of the base booking price. The remainder is transferred via Stripe Connect to your connected bank account on Stripe's payout schedule (rolling daily after an initial reserve period).
4. Conduct standards
You agree to:
- Arrive on time for confirmed bookings and stay through the agreed end time.
- Treat every pet with care, follow the owner's feeding, exercise, and medication instructions, and contact a veterinarian immediately if a pet shows signs of illness or injury.
- Communicate proactively with the owner via Petolina DMs about anything unusual.
- Maintain a smoke-free, clean environment if you board pets at your home.
5. Cancellation
You may cancel a booking before its start time. The pet owner will be refunded in full and you forfeit any payment for the booking. Repeated late cancellations or no-shows may result in reduced visibility in search and ultimately removal from the platform.
6. Liability and insurance
Sitters are solely responsible for any injury, illness, damage, or loss that occurs during a booking. Petolina does not provide sitter liability insurance, and is not liable to pet owners for the outcomes of a booking. We recommend that you carry your own commercial pet sitting liability insurance through a Canadian broker (commonly $50–$150/month for $1–2M of coverage).
If a pet is injured during a booking, contact a local emergency vet immediately, notify the owner, and document the incident in Petolina DMs so there is a record.
7. Reviews and ratings
Pet owners can leave a public 1–5 star review after a booking. We do not edit reviews on a sitter's behalf, but we will remove reviews that violate our Terms of Service (e.g., contain personal data of non-parties, are fraudulent, or constitute harassment).
8. Suspension and removal
Petolina may suspend or remove your sitter listing if you violate these Terms, repeatedly receive low ratings or substantiated complaints, or are the subject of a credible safety report. Money owed for completed bookings will still be paid out via Stripe.
